The Cooler Master MM730 Gaming Mouse delivers on its promise of a lightweight, responsive gaming experience but has a few significant drawbacks.
With the $79.99 USD MM730 Gaming Mouse, Cooler Master has created one of the sleekest and most lightweight wired gaming mice[1] on the market today. The MM730 even beats its predecessor, the MM720, weighing one gram less. Apart from being extremely lightweight, the MM730 is also extremely versatile, offering optimal performance for gaming and other tasks, with an excellent sensor and quick response times that successfully delivers on its promises of being both lightweight and responsive.
Like its wireless partner, the Cooler Master MM731[2], the MM730 offers a sleek, simplistic design that distances itself from the more prominent gaming peripheral trends to date. While there are RGB accents on the scroll wheel and hexagonal logo, the MM730 does not include as much lighting as competitors like Razer and Logitech and only comes in black or white, which can allow it to blend better in office or school settings. The MM730's shape and size are also more on par with a traditional computer mouse rather than a gaming mouse.
By far the most noticeable feature about the MM730 is the weight. Straight out of the packaging, the mouse is incredibly lightweight, clocking in at only 48 grams. Despite this, it does not feel cheaply built or flimsy. Even the braided cord is well-made and lightweight enough to give the entire mouse significant mobility in all directions. Clicks still feel sturdy, and the buttons are easy to press but not easy to use in error. Users may notice a significant decrease in accidental clicks, even with the two additional buttons on the left side that are default mapped to the forward and back buttons in browser windows. Clicks are fairly muted and do not feel obtrusive, even when playing FPS or other games that can require significant clicking[4].
The MM730 is also quite fast. Out of the box, users may be alarmed at the low DPI, but a button on the underside allows for quick customization to a more optimal setting. The button is located under the mouse near the sensor and is nearly impossible to accidentally click, allowing settings to remain consistent even for the most intense of users. Users can further change their DPI settings and input a more precise number to fit their unique needs using the MasterPlus+ Software, which must be downloaded separately. The RGB features can indicate which of the five onboard profiles are currently in use, allowing a simple and seamless switch between games. The MM730 comes pre-outfitted with PTFE feet for improved glide and LK optical mouse switch sensors and an optical encoder for improved precision, movement, and responsiveness that may make it a contender as one of the best gaming mice of the year[5].
The two major drawbacks of the Cooler Master MM730 are the shape and size of the mouse and its customizability. Some players with larger hands may not prefer this mouse because, even with the optional included mouse grips, hand positioning can feel a little rounded and claw-like. While this won't necessarily be noticeable and is not inherently uncomfortable, it may take some getting used to and has the potential to impede performance.
The RGB features on the MM730 are extremely subtle, and, based on their placement, will almost always be covered by a player's hand. This seems like an oversight, given some of the customization options available on the MasterPlus+ software increase and decrease the brightness and movement of the light as the player moves and clicks the mouse. The color and movement options for the lights are also fairly slim, making the Cooler Master MM730 a less optimal choice for fans of LED customization to go with their setup[6].
There is something to be said for Cooler Master relying so heavily on the MasterPlus+ software for customization but failing to indicate that in or on the packaging. Even the insert that comes with the MM730 only lists the support site, not the name of the software or a download link. This can severely limit options for users unaware of the software or its capabilities. While there are buttons on the physical device itself to ensure players can at least increase the DPI from its out-of-the-box 400, the majority of options are inaccessible without a software download.

Overall, the Cooler Master MM730 delivers on its promises of lightweight responsiveness. It manages to be even lighter than the MM720 that came before[7] while still feeling durable and well-engineered. The MM730 uses state-of-the-art optical technology to ensure speedy movement and response times, helping users improve their performance in almost any game. It is also versatile, able to work well in a school or office setting, and limits accidental clicks. While it isn't perfect, and while some of its usability and color features are less than optimal, for gamers who have a bit of room in their budget, the Cooler Master MM730 can boost performance and make an excellent addition to any setup.
