Apple released the iOS 16 public beta in July, enabling early adopters to download and install it on their iPhones. Here's how to do it.
Apple[1] released the iOS 16[2] public beta in July, enabling early adopters to download and install it on their iPhones. The release came one month after Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June, where the company launched the first developer beta of iOS 16[3]. However, not many people were eligible to download the software, as developer betas require an Apple Developer Program membership, costing $100 per year. Developer betas are also typically more buggy and unstable than public betas and are hence not recommended for everyday use.
Apple launched the second developer beta of iOS 16 in late June before the third dev beta was released in early July. The first stable release of iOS 16 is expected to be rolled out this fall[4], although the exact date remains a mystery. The software is compatible with a slew of iPhones, going back to the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X that were launched in 2017. However, it won't be available to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, which angered many iPhone 7-series users who made it a point to vent their frustrations online.
The first public beta of iOS 16[6] is a free upgrade and is relatively easy to download and install on compatible iPhones[7]. The first step towards doing that is signing up for the Apple Beta Software program. However, before that, it is advisable to back up all data in the device, especially if it contains important documents, photos and other files. By default, iPhones automatically back up data to iCloud periodically, but if the feature is disabled, users can still manually back up their devices. To do that, go over to 'Settings,' click on the profile name, select 'iCloud,' and then hit 'iCloud Backup.' Finally, tap on 'Backup Now' to back up all data in that device. How much time the backup process takes will depend on the amount of data that needs to be backed up and the internet speed.
To get started with the installation, go to the Apple Beta Software Program website (download link in the source below) on the target iPhone and tap on the blue 'Sign Up' button. Now log into Apple ID using the Face ID attached to the iPhone[8]. On the next page, scroll down a little, and under 'Get Started,' tap 'Enroll your iOS device.' On the next page, scroll down and look for the 'Install Profile' section. Here, read the literature carefully and then hit the blue 'Download profile' button. Once the downloading is done, tap 'Install,' enter the passcode and then follow on-screen instructions. Users may have to hit 'Install' a couple more times before installing the file. Now restart the phone to get it ready to download the iOS 16 public beta.
Once the phone boots back up, open the 'Settings' app, go to 'General,' then select 'Software Update.' On the next page, iOS 16 will be ready for download, so simply tap on the 'Download and Install' button to get started. Do note that the phone requires a certain amount of free storage space for the new update to download, so the users must check they have enough available storage before trying to download the new update. Once the download is complete, reboot the iPhone and the device should run iOS 16 the next time it boots up.
